Volunteer Opportunities
Living Classrooms Foundation is so grateful for our dedicated volunteers and interns, who range from individuals to students to large corporate groups. Our volunteers are instrumental in making an impact on our programs and communities in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. We tailor volunteer projects for individuals and large groups alike to suit your interests, size, and schedule.
Baltimore, MD Region

Community Cleanups/ Beautification Projects Living Classrooms operates a variety of community centers and programs in East Baltimore, and we regularly have opportunities for groups to help with! These opportunities include, but are not limited to, neighborhood cleanups, historic ship cleanups, gardening projects, and painting efforts. These projects are constantly rotating but there’s always something to do!

Shoreline Cleanup Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center is a partnership between Living Classrooms, the Aquarium, and the Port of Baltimore to revitalize this area of waterfront land. Volunteer groups can conduct shoreline clean-ups, help build and maintain trails, and help plant and maintain various gardens on the property.
Where: Masonville Cove (1000 Frankfurst Avenue)
Timeframe: Flexible
Number of volunteers: Maximum of 25 volunteers

We are always looking for volunteers to assist with our regular programming during the school year or summer at various Living Classrooms locations! We have previously utilized volunteer groups to facilitate field days with our students. Volunteers can either lead the stations or participate with the students. Activities can include, but are not limited to, relay races, tug of war, team-building exercises, crafts, snack making, and more!
Timeframe: After school, 3:00-6:00 pm/Summer camp, 9:00 am-3:00 pm

Many of our sites need murals, both large and small! If your group has artists who are willing to take on painting a mural, Living Classrooms would love to have your help!

Individual Volunteer Opportunities

We are searching for volunteers who are interested in capturing the vibrant spirit of our programs through videography and photography.
Timeframe: Monday - Friday with occasional weekend opportunities.

Volunteers are needed at several of our community centers to assist with homework help for reading, writing, and math for all grade levels. We are also looking for experienced instructors for the following after-school activities: swimming, chess, STEM, financial literacy, dance, Spanish, and cursive handwriting.
Where: Patterson Park House (200 S. Linwood Ave), UA House at Fayette (1100 E. Fayette St), POWER House (316 S. Caroline St), Fresh Start (802 S. Caroline St).
Timeframe: Monday - Friday (between 3-5:30 pm or 9-1:00 pm) *Specific times may vary
Number of Volunteers: One tutor per student

(1) Crossroads School
This mentoring program connects Crossroads students with professionals working in neighboring companies. Mentors volunteer an average of two hours per month, providing guidance and a listening ear to students. The school counselor plans most mentoring sessions.
Where: Crossroads School (802 S. Caroline St)
Timeframe: Thursdays (1:40 - 2:25pm)
Number of Volunteers: One mentor per student
(2) Girls’ Empowerment Mission Program (GEM)
GEM is a program that empowers motivated high school girls who lack access to support, resources, and opportunities by providing mentoring and growth experiences that will enable them to become independent, self-sufficient, and confident young women. Mentors must be female college graduates over 25 years of age and willing to commit to a year of mentoring.
Number of Volunteers: One mentor per student

(1) A music program highlighting lyricism and instrument education pairs musically inclined volunteers of any level with students to flex their creativity.
Creative Mentors Needed
Spend time with youth; demonstrate creative skill; facilitate activities for learning and engagement; set up/clean-up; make or create music.
Where: UA House at Fayette (1100 E. Fayette St)
Timeframe: One hour per week over 12 weeks; Monday - Friday (between 4:00-7:00 pm), Saturdays (12:00-5:00pm)
Number of Volunteers: 20 (one per student)
(2) Program Assistance & Support Needed
Spend time with youth; assist with activities; help with engagement or struggling students provide service or skill to support programming, i.e., videographer, sound engineer, photographer.

Organization Overview:
Living Classrooms Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen communities and inspire young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms”. Through our unique learning environments, Living Classrooms provides access to more equitable education, workforce, health, and wellness opportunities that enable individuals to achieve their goals and build safer, stronger, and healthier communities for all.
Program Overview:
This summer, Living Classrooms Foundation will host its annual cohort of “Inspired to Serve” Summer Interns. We have 8 unpaid internship positions available, with placement options at several of our programs in Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Living Classrooms is always in need of groups of volunteers to help keep our sites clean and beautiful! Projects may include invasive plant removal, trash clean-up, construction projects, painting, and planting (as donations or purchases of plants allow).

We always seek experienced instructors in various disciplines to volunteer at all of our National Capital Region sites. These volunteer roles include, but are not limited to, career workshop speakers, interviews, yoga or exercise class instructors, English and math tutors, creative artists, and naturalists. We are very interested in environmental science experts who may be interested in working with high school students on fieldwork and projects.
